Early to bed,

night owl, or burning the candle at both ends?  I tend to be option #3 because I enjoy having time to myself, and “both ends” seems to be the only time to get that precious commodity.

I got to thinking about how some people are early risers, others are night owls, and some of us are both ends people when I noted the times of people’s comments on blogs or facebook. Truth be told,  I guess I am really am a night owl who wants to be an early riser, too.  So I pretend I do both.  Really, I drag myself out of be in the morning on most days after staying up too late the night before.

Right now, it is 12:45 am, and I intended to be asleep by midnight, but I am waiting for some nasty stomach symptoms to subside.  Two doses of the pink stuff have improved things, but I can’t sleep just yet.  So what else is there to do but blog about some mundane thoughts running through my mind?

So, which are you?  An early to bed early riser?  A night  owl who seems to have a daily hangover?  A “I only need 4 hours of sleep a night, and I am still Mary Sunshine who runs 4 miles every day?”

Talk amongst yourselves.

  1. I like being a morning person, but I have trouble going to bed at night. There is too much to do! And if I want to read that is the time to do it. I guess I go back and forth and have a little of #3 in there too :0)

  2. i am ever the night owl. i feel like i should’ve grown out of it by now, but in spite of age and effort, nothing seems to be changing. i stay up shamefully late and then guzzle coffee all day to try to wake up. then, right around eight o’clock at night, i come alive for about six hours and do all manner of productive things, including housework and workouts. it would all be fine except the rest of the world functions on a completely different schedule. yet, the life of a homeschool mom is separate enough from the rest of the world that it can’t seem to impose its rhythm on me. and i kinda wish it would. ideally, i suppose that i wish the whole world would convert to my wackadoodle schedule, but as that is never going to happen, i wish i could convert to normality! if i ever have a lifestyle that demands i be up and at ’em at six am every day, i am sure i can manage to get to bed before two! but when will i scrub the bathtub?! 🙂

  3. I wish I were one of those people who could do well on only 4 or 5 hours of sleep each night. I could get so much more done! Here’s what bugs me: why is it that when I can sleep in I’m up at 5, and when I have to get up I feel like I could sleep a lot longer?

  4. Rhonda,
You’re one I think of as an early riser, but I suppose it comes partly because of your job.

    Abby,
I also feel that when I have to, I will manage to become an early riser. In the mean time, I’ll probably be setting my alarm for way earlier than I’ll actually get up.

  5. I’m a night owl by birth, but I have made myself a get up early in the morning person because I feel emotionally and psychologically a lot healthier when I get my 7-9 hours of sleep each night, and get up early (5:30am or 6am). I do a lot of house chores and bills in the morning after brewing coffee. Not having kids allows that time to be mine. Occasionally, I take poochie for a walk…and we share the time. 🙂

  6. Ann,
Thanks for stopping by. You live your life the way I always think I should, but my bad habits of staying up late are hard to break. Even with kids, that time in the morning would be mine. But, I have finally just accept that if I can get some things accomplished late at night, that is just as good as getting up early and getting things done. Although I still don’t get enough hours of sleep. So I need to work on that part.

  7. Since I have two young kids I am the hangover gal….I really try to get to bed by 10 or I am a pill for about two hours before I kick in. Just ask hubby, and children.

I think it definitly has to do with wanting to have me time, without being interrupted by “mommmmy” .
