Work Update & One of the Most Apalling Statements that Was Ever Made to Me

Well, I didn’t get the full-time job, so that is off the table.  And, that’s a good thing.  The more I think about it, the more I realize I need to make decent money while having more control of my schedule.  Which brings me to the part-time job.  It’s not a bad little gig–3 days a week during school hours.  However, there are some issues.  First, the person I am replacing was fired for embezzling.  I think that makes the scrutiny over me a little more intense than I prefer.  Second, there’s no one there to tell me exactly how they want things done.  It is sort of guess work on the part of one of the managers.  Third, the manager who has the most contact with me and tells me how he thinks they want things made the most appalling statement I have ever heard in workplace chit chat.

He to me, “What did you think of the McCain speech last night?”

Me to him, “Well, I’m not sure I want to say.  I think we’re on opposite sides of the aisle.”

Him again, “Oh, so you’re a Republican.  What do think of Palin?”

Me, “I like her.  I don’t think I could vote for Obama.  I’m pro-life, and he is just too far opposite of me.”

Him, “Well, I’ll never be pro-life.  My wife has worked for special school district for thirty years, and she says she could never be pro-life after all the things she has seen with these kids.”

Me, in my head, silently sitting there, in shock with no expression on my face, “Wow.  I can’t believe you said that.  Who are you? God?  Are you perfect?  Is your wife perfect?”

  1. Wow! We’ll pray that you’ll be able to navigate the minefields with great wisdom and grace for as long as you work in this part-time job. I guess the really tragic thing is that this man and his wife likely represent so many others who have bought into the same way of thinking, though they might not be so horribly blunt.

  2. Oh. My.

I mean, I’ve read some of that sort of nastiness online, but I didn’t think that REAL people actually said those sorts of things.

  3. You are much more sanctified than I. My tempted comeback: “Well, after the things I’ve seen having worked for you for the past X [months/years], I’m almost coming ’round to that point of view myself.”

  4. Heard the same sentiment in a call-in show about Palin’s 5th child – that it was irresponsible of her to have him. It is the whole Rachels multiple-strategies (read relativistic) utilitarianism and Singer ethics of personhood taught in colleges gone to seed.

  5. Well, I probably would have sat silently appalled too, but here’s what part of me would have like to have said:

“Oh, that’s very interesting. Why doesn’t your wife just take an Uzi to work tomorrow and do everyone a favor by blowing all these useless wastes of natrual resources away. Obviously you believe murder is the moral answer, so what’s stopping her? I guess she’s a hypocrite, eh? Willing to waste her own life and human resources on caring for such human garbage.”

Then again, with their moral abilities I’m guessing they wouldn’t see the logic.

    Discretion reminds me of:
    Titus 3:1-5 (ESV)
Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, [2] to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. [3] For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. [4] But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, [5] he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

As one who continues to demonstrate foolishness more often than I’d ever want to admit… I think I’ll go back to silence. Prayer would be wise too, don’t you think? [sigh] Come, Lord Jesus… come quickly.
