I am reading with renewed interest a book you loaned me several years back. Though I suppose it’s the revised edition, it’s mostly the same material: The Well-Trained Mind. Absolutely excellent, thought-provoking, and extremely practical. Having seen the benefits of Classical Education for my two eldest children I am a huge fan of the method, much more so than I was four or five years ago. Don’t know if we’ll end up doing it at home or not, but I am loving the book.

I am glad you’re enjoying re-reading The Well-Trained Mind. I know lots of people who pick and choose what portions of it they use for schooling their children. They use it as more of a guide or resource book.
I finally finished the 4th Harry Potter book and have barely begun book 5. If I don’t have frequent and long waits at a doctor’s office, it takes me much longer to finish any book these days. I am interested in hearing what you think of The Solace of Leaving Early. And if you want to borrow The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, let me know.

M/R – Ah, you have gotten ahead of me. Perhaps after I finish the tome I am currently working on I will pick the series back up. Jay wants me to hurry up so we can watch the fifth movie.
I jsut noticed that under your faves, you’ve listed “A Girl Named Zippy” That cracks me up, because I bought that book on a whim at B&N a couple years ago. I started reading it while I was there and was intrigued, so I purchased it…I’ve never finished it, but I don’t know why! I never imagined anyone had ever read it before!
Maybe I’ll pull it down from the shelf…it should be a quick read.

I bought A Girl Named Zippy from the library sale at the Weber Rd branch for $1 last year. It took me a while to read it because it is just several memoir stories from her life that don’t have to be read together. However, there are some themes that tie it together. When I was reading it, I kept thinking of all the crazy stories April was telling on her blog at the time. It also reminded me of a lot of people I knew growing up in rural PA. I guess I like it because it is a slice of Americana.
The novel I am reading, The Solace of Leaving Early, is by the author of Zippy. I’ll let you know what I think as I get further into it.
I’m curious how you like Persuasion. I picked it up a couple of years ago and it was not my favorite Austen. One of these days, I’m going to get to Harry Potter! S. has finished them all and he really wants me to share in that experience.
