Wassup Wednesday 12–Life is Complicated

Kids:  So we are coming to the end of one semester of homeschooling all four kids.  Are they doing ok?  Yeah.  Are they learning as much as they did at school?  Maybe.  Is it easy?  No.  Is it my number one choice for their education? No.  Am I learning anything in the process?  Youbetcha!

Some good things are happening on the school front.  Today, referring to a book he is reading as part of his schoolwork, Calvin said, “This book is sorta hard to stop reading.”  He doesn’t mind reading, but he’s not a voracious reader like his brother, so this is big for him.  I think Charis’s reading is improving, too.  Teaching it to her is just turning my hair more gray every day 🙂

On another kid note, football is finally done!  Can I hear an Amen Sista!!!  This is the second week in which we have just been beside ourselves looking for things to do in the evenings instead of taking a boy to football.  Of course, Monday nights and Saturday afternoons we still have to take Calvin to basketball practice, but it is like a walk in the park compared to football.

Me:  I was a little sick during the month of October, and now, midway through November, I feel significantly better.  We have also been evaluating our life situation, and we have come to the conclusion that I probably need to work full-time.  Just today, I completed a fourth interview for a new full-time position.  It has really been a pleasant interview process, and, of course, I am wanting the job.  But if I don’t get it, I am trusting God for something better.

If I get it, there will obviously be some changes to the education process at our house.  But for now, I continue to be a homeschooling mom.

Books: Still in HP4 and Simply Christian.  I don’t have  much to say because I am so darn slow about reading lately.  But did I mention I have done 10 loads of laundry in 2 days?  The basement floor is visible now.  That’s something, right?

In Conclusion: This seems like a bailout post, but it will have to do.  Over and out until next Wednesday or until something significant happens before then.

  1. I know how you feel with less commitments. After 6 years of AWANAS we decided to take a sabbatical this year. The kids were complaining and it was a lot of work for me every week. I felt like it was my homework. Joey started scouts this year and I have been doing Girl Scouts with Bridget (this is our 6th year). So this year (with no ongoing Wed. night commitment) we lined up Bridget and Joey’s scout schedules to that we have Joey Monday, Bridget Tuesday twice a month. That way we get 1 week with no evening commitments. Also we switched from going to a weekly small group to hosting a Sunday morning small group at church. There have been nights when we want to “do” something and we have no idea what to “do” as we haven’t really had open weeknights for years!! We have been playing family games (board games, Rock Band, etc) and have even headed to the local $3 theater on a school night (gasp!). But since we have Wed nights off, the kids have been asking about the Wed night program at the church where we do Bible Study. They went tonight and they all liked it and want to go back, every week! Easy come easy go.
Good luck with your job interview process!

  2. Lindy,
Thanks for stopping by. We do Awana for the girls on Thursday nights, but they are pretty driven and do the memory work on their own for the most part. Although I have put it on their school schedule as part of their Bible work for school to give them some time during the day to work at it.

So we are not completely free of evening activities. I also go to choir on Wednesday nights. But we still have some time for reading stories and playing board games that we haven’t had in a while.

I’ll let you know about what happens with the job. I actually brought up the moms club book group today in the interview as something I was a part of starting and feeling good about that. Thanks for your well wishes.

  3. “bailout post”? I don’t think so! About the reading, mine always ends up either as binge spurts (especially on a trip), or a series of short snatches of reading spread over a very long period of time. I’ve started rereading the Narnia series, out of order this time, and just finished The Last Battle.

  4. hurray that football is over! and i’m glad to hear about the fourth interview. you were right about j-town, btw, i saw a listing from this month. in looking for it, i stumbled upon a whole slew of other listings we didn’t know about, so i am glad you got me curious! i enjoyed catching up on sunday and look forward to hearing the next update, especially about the job 🙂

  5. Rhonda,

The book is called Catherine, Called Birdy. It is a Newberry Award winner. Here’s the amazon url: http://www.amazon.com/Catherine-Called-Birdy-Trophy-Newbery/dp/0064405842/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258670438&sr=8-1

I have Nevinn and Calvin reading through the same list of books, alternating between titles, and Nevin liked this one, too. I might have to read it myself.

    Mom,
Yes. My reading tends to be in spurts, too. Since I am not hosting anyone for Thanksgiving, maybe I can use that time as an excuse to read for a couple days. We’ll see . . .

    Abby,
Thanks for stoping by, and thanks for the update on the job posts. I couldn’t find the more recent listing since we talked on Sunday, but I am glad you did! I look forward to talking with you again, too. We have to get some visiting in before the plant leaves . . .

  6. I haven’t read C Called B, but I have read the author’s book The Midwife’s Apprentice. It was one of my reading selections in my literature class when I was going for library certification. If Calvin is enjoying the current one he may like M A as well. Really well-written. Isn’t it great that you have children who enjoy reading?
