If GOP wins, is there any chance that Palin can resist being Quayled?

Hope so.  If not:

Palin will be to McCain what Spiro Agnew was to Richard Nixon and Dan Quayle was to George H. W. Bush — conservative vice presidents who had virtually no impact on the moderate presidents they served. In a McCain administration, it is more likely that we would see Lieberman appointed Secretary of State than Palin being given any responsibilities more significant than office secretary. And if there is one thing this election, this party, and their convention made clear, it’s that Palin’s entire purpose is to pacify traditional conservatives on the multiple issues they still care about, so that in Republican victory, McCain and the neoconservatives can finally get to work on their only issue.

    Come on Mark,

I am desperately trying to find a reason to vote for McCain. We all know the VP is a useless position. John Adams, as the first VP, made the observation. I don’t expect Paline to be given great authority. Few VPs are. However, this appointment, if the ticket is elected, will set, from what I am hearing, a true conservative in a position to run for President in four or eight years. Now for the non-PC point. Should a woman be the ruler of a nation? There is at least some Scripture to support a negative answer. If the answer is in the negative, Scripture suggests that her election would be something of a curse. Well, wouldn’t that be interesting to see a woman kick these girly men Republicans in the you know what with true conservatism.

I have not brought myself to vote for McCain yet, but I do get a kick out of the speculation.

I don’t see where you find Scriptural support for saying that it is wrong for a woman to rule. I don’t think it is as common as men ruling (even in our culture this is the case), so naturally, if a culture is suddenly led mostly by women then it represents judgment: the men have been removed by battle.

But Deborah was not disobeying God to rule. So I don’t see why it should necessarily be so for anyone else. If you think we should have a more qualified man…. well, that might be exactly the curse we are under. But Sarah is God’s mercy to us, in that case, nothing less.

For me, I think a strong conservative and responsible woman and mother and wife would be an awesome thing. It could give some competition to many less helpful female role models.

This all assumes a lot of things about Palin. I want to be hopeful but I have no real assurances in any of this.

Oh, and on your main point: I agree. I’m hoping for a regime change in 4 to 8 years. But then again she has to avoid being Quayled. He pretty much disappeared in 4 years.

You and I agree. My initial comment was primarily tounge in cheek. If you take a look at my blog, I have tried to struggle with my problems with McCain. I am trying to do the same with Palin. I am have far less trouble with Palin than I am with McCain. On the issue of women and ruling, I think Pastor Wilson says it well in his recent blog “The Creation Order and Sarah.” Wilson has done several good pieces on this issue as a matter of fact. Isaiah 3:12 does suggest there is a problem with it becoming a cultural norm as Wilson indicates.

Don’t get me wrong. I am hopeful about Palin. I really would like to see her kick the girly men Repbulican butts. If she is a judgment, lets hope she causes us to repent.
