Hollywood officially out of ideas

I just heard on my G4 gaming news podcast that “they” (?) are making a movie based on the arcade game–can you believe this?–Joust.  Better.  It will be set in a future Las Vegas that hovers up in the sky.

I doubt I’m ever going to see that movie, but I would have purchased tickets to witness it first being proposed.  And bought popcorn.

Exclusive: Conquering the Drawbacks of Democracy

They removed the article but you can read it here. An excerpt.

By elevating popular fancy over truth, Democracy is clearly an enemy of not just truth, but duty and justice, which makes it the worst form of government. President Bush must overcome not just the situation in Iraq, but democratic government.

However, President Bush has a valuable historical example that he could choose to follow.

When the ancient Roman general Julius Caesar was struggling to conquer ancient Gaul, he not only had to defeat the Gauls, but he also had to defeat his political enemies in Rome who would destroy him the moment his tenure as consul (president) ended.

Caesar pacified Gaul by mass slaughter; he then used his successful army to crush all political opposition at home and establish himself as permanent ruler of ancient Rome. This brilliant action not only ended the personal threat to Caesar, but ended the civil chaos that was threatening anarchy in ancient Rome – thus marking the start of the ancient Roman Empire that gave peace and prosperity to the known world.

If President Bush copied Julius Caesar by ordering his army to empty Iraq of Arabs and repopulate the country with Americans, he would achieve immediate results: popularity with his military; enrichment of America by converting an Arabian Iraq into an American Iraq (therefore turning it from a liability to an asset); and boost American prestiege [sic] while terrifying American enemies.

FSM has removed the article. As you’ll see by looking at their media relations, they are given a mainstream voice.

(It looks like thy have purged the other essays by Atkinson from their site.)

YouTube Videos Encouraging Anorexia

Thursday August 16, 2007

They are encouraging your kids not to eat. There are more than 8,000 YouTube videos telling young girls that skinny is the way to go, and giving them some disturbing role models. Do people really pay attention to these so-called ‘Thinspos’ – short for Thinspiration videos?

The Negative: Every kid is with some passing insane idea is one google click away from a ready-made support group to encourage it.

The Positive: This should be easier for parents to monitor.

The pitiful thing is that Uncle Sam gives away a lot more

By The Denver Post

Moscow – A Russian region of Ulyanovsk has found a novel way to fight the nation’s birth-rate crisis: It has declared Sept. 12 the Day of Conception and for the third year running is giving couples time off from work to procreate.

The hope is for a brood of babies exactly nine months later on Russia’s national day. Couples who “give birth to a patriot” during the June 12 festivities win money, cars, refrigerators and other prizes.

Ulyanovsk, about 550 miles east of Moscow, has held similar contests since 2005. Since then, the number of competitors, and the number of babies born to them, has been on the rise….

Of course, if you are “poor” enough, you get quite a bit for your kids from Uncle Sugar guaranteed without having to win any lottery.

If you get it, I think you should give thanks to God and spend it (no “benefits-revolution” bullying  on this blog, thank you).  But it is still sort of sickening since I am pretty certain that most Russians aspire to something like our standard of living.

Taliban kidnaps Korean Christians

SEOUL, July 20 (Yonhap) — Some 20 South Koreans were kidnapped by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, days after they entered the country for Christian volunteer work, the Foreign Ministry in Seoul said Friday.

The Taliban, meanwhile, said they had seized 18 South Koreans, including 15 women, and will announce what demands they will make for their release, according to news reports from Kabul.

“They are safe with us. We are investigating them and our demands and reaction will be announced later,” said Taliban spokesman Said Yousuf Ahmadi via a satellite phone from an undisclosed location, according to the Reuters.

If this was coming to Saint Louis…

The demon-destroying “chosen one” and her evil-fighting team are singing out their deepest, darkest secrets on the big screen, and you can join in. “Once More with Feeling,” the Emmy-nominated musical episode from Joss Whedon’s cult television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” is touring the country as an interactive sing-a-long…(source).

As the end credits roll, series mastermind Joss Whedon, who snuck into a back-row seat right after the program began, strides down the aisle. It’s the first Buffy sing-along he’s ever been to, and he has the sheepish, overwhelmed look of someone who’s just received a massive outpouring of love. (source)

And the great thing is that you don’t need DVDs. You can just get practiced up with youtube. For example:

Democracy is easier if the minorities can be terrorized and driven off

Although the violence appears to be more anarchic than concerted, it has had the same effect as an organized campaign to destroy Iraq’s Assyrians. Virtually every member of the community is under siege….

Christian women are particularly vulnerable. BetBasoo writes: “Often incidents do not end with the prisoner’s release. In one case in Baghdad, the victim committed suicide after the ransom was paid and she went home, because of the torture and sexual violence she suffered. In another case, a young woman talked to her family by phone and told them: ‘I’m dead,’ referring to being gang-raped. She eventually committed suicide whilst still in the hands of her tormentors.”

Please remember the usual caveats that, if you think something I say is boneheaded, and your looking forward to voting for her, you’re still welcom to visit my church and I won’t bite or anything….

Becaue it can’t be true, can it?

Three things you can take to the bank (or your bookie) next year: the Arizona Cardinals won’t be playing in the Superbowl, Mardi Gras will be on a Tuesday, and Hillary Rodham Clinton will become the Democrat’s presidential nominee (read the rest).

Oh well. I guess it guarrantees more to talk about in the next year.
