baby-killing by doctors, pre-emptive invasions and regime change, standing armies, collective bargaining monopolies, money printing that raises fuel and food prices, Utility monopolies jacking up his monthly bill by a massive amount, and watching the sales tax accumulate at the cash register because he went to buy food for his children.
I have always been sooooooo thankful that my state has always refrained from taxing food and clothing (as well as medicine/health products.) Taxing food and then turning around and whining about how unjust it is that the tax structures aren’t more progressive than they are is just evil.
Where exactly is the capital going to come from for 7 different power companies to run lines into your neighborhood? Efficient allocation of capital would dictate that the rich folks would get power, and the poor neighborhoods might still be on gas lamps at night. Part of the deal Ma Bell got for the phone monopoly was that they had to serve everybody. The power companies got the same basic deal. Generally speaking, it has worked out rather well. The reason energy is so expensive has little to do with regulation in the US. It’s the out of control demand in China buying up all the capacity that is raising our prices. Figure out how to push China into a depression and you’ll see energy prices drop through the floor.
