The faith of Joseph and Nicodemus

From Mark 15:

And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

From John 19:

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight.

I’ve heard preachers deny we have any evidence that Nicodemus became a believer in Jesus.  But I don’t think this works.  When someone who claims to be the Messiah is killed, the universal reaction in Palestine before and after Jesus is to abandon him not only as mistaken, but as a blasphemer under the judgment of God.  Remember how hard it was for the disciples to hear Jesus tell them that he was going to Jerusalem to die.

So here we have Joseph risking harm (he had to take courage) and asking for the body.  Nicodemus spends what must be a sacrificial amount of money to bury Jesus.  Meanwhile, the Eleven are still out hiding in fear.

Seems to me this demonstrates extraordinary faith.
