Gandalf tries to get a hobbit to be brave

“You seem to think that you are defending this Hobbit hole from the enemy like you were the king defending his city against the forces of darkness,” said Gandalf to Frodo. The truth is that you are just hiding. You haven’t even explored all the halls here have you?”

Frodo shuddered. “I think the Halls I don’t use are not fit for much use. When I approach them I am sure I hear orcs creeping in the darkness.”

“Well,” said Gandalf sadly. “If you won’t even acquaint yourself with more of Westminster Halls than you are comfortable with, I suppose it is useless to ask you to venture outside and see the rocks and the green, Baggins.”

“Too much of a dangerous business,” muttered Frodo.

Brilliant. I wish I could say that I’d thought of the Green Baggins connection in my original post, because then I would have been all extra-spicy-clever. But, uh, I didn’t. Oh well. Don’t tell anyone.

Now, however, I fear that I have the solemn duty of I must suspending your Tolkien Fan Club Membership for an indefinite period, until you properly identify the speaker of the original quote! Because it wasn’t Gandalf…(though, admittedly, he fits better here than the original speaker would).

Your penance is to re-read the Fellowship of the Ring, and promptly.

    😉

Well, I will start with the Hobbit. I was eyeing it today before reading your post. Mabye it was Bilbo being reflective with Frodo? Anyway, I’ll gladly do my penance. I have to do all I can to merit my own salvation before God, you know. 😉
