[post evacuated of feeling]

But, while your waiting for this book, you should be aware that there is a great book of impressive scholarship that teaches the Reformation doctrine of justification and is well worth reading:

Here it is:

Peter LillbackThe Binding of God: Calvins Role in the Development of Covenant Theology (Texts and Studies in Reformation and Post-Reformation Thought) is a stellar monograph that particularly focuses how Calvin understood his own doctrine of justification in relation to key themes such as the Law of God and the Covenant. This is a must-read.

    Mark,
How can you make such snide remarks about a book you have not read? You seem to fall into this snare rather frequently. Your open hostitity towards men like John Piper and especially Guy Waters , who co-edited with me the forthcoming book ‘Faith Alone’ ill becomes a minister of the Gospel. Gary L.W. Johnson

Gary – I don’t mean to speak for Mark, but I think he is just making fun of the over-the-top promotional language for the book.

As for Piper, Mark has been a reluctant critic – he likes Piper but is suprised at the recent turn to polemics from Piper against Wright. Do you have some kind of response to Mark’s criticisms?

As for Waters, he does seem like a great guy, but his work has received extremely negative reviews in WTJ and in the JETS. Further, he uses this “every theology is either heading to Rome or Geneva” dichotomy to analyze all theological controversies. That’s a formula that gives one no confidence that the results of the scholarship will be helpful and balanced.

    Mr. Johnson,

Many of the people Waters discussed in his first book on the FV felt they were not represented well. The language used to promote this new book is pretty over the top. Given those two things, it would be understandable if Mr. Horne or other FV proponents seemed a little sensitive or frustrated.

But, I know that’s not the case. Mr. Horne is merely trying to engage boldly and charitably with opponents to the FV. I have not seen a lot of willingness on the part of those who decry the FV as heretical to engage with FV advocates. This has been disappointing to me.

Mr. Johnson, acting hurt on behalf of ‘ministers’ for ‘snide remarks’ that I cannot see is not contributing to productive dialogue. This is poor rhetoric indeed!

yours for the purity and peace of the church,

“Mark, Why are you so given to this kind of ‘ in your face’ response to fellow ministers with whom you have differences? What is gained by this kind speech?”

    Austin,
I see very well, especially side bars that refer to Guy Waters books as ” worthless”. As I said, Mark uses what can only be called ‘ inflamatory ‘ speech that does not advance the debate in a helpful way. I will post no more on this site.

In addition, some of Waters’ targets (Bararch, Wilkins, maybe Lusk and a few others) kindly offered to review Waters’ books before they were published. They wanted to ensure that Waters was describing their positions accurately. He didn’t grant any of them their requests. And now he teams up with a Southern Baptist (Mohler) to critique his Presbyterian brothers?

From the gnpcb website: “A thorough look at the false and empty doctrines that are attacking evangelicalism’s commitment to one of its key doctrines–sola fide, by faith alone.”

    Austin,

“False and empty doctrines . . . attacking . . . key doctrines” doesn’t sound much better to me than calling something “worthless.” What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

    Mark,

As you know, for Christians, sauce for the goose is NOT sauce for the gander. Turn the other cheek and you will be blessed. So I would urge you not to take your opponents own behavior as your standard. You must love those who hate you, even if they are whiney hippocrites.

That was a link here which you could interact with, if you wanted to.

Again, the allegations about book criticisms is simply false and the material about rhetoric is simply a text book case of trying to use rules to shut down others which one has no plans to follow or expect one’s friends to follow.

Hold still and be quiet while we destroy you. is the commandment I have violated.

Well, OK. But I didn’t think laughing at sales promotional material was such a bad thing.

As far as the link to the Waters piece. That is long gone and am not sure what to do about it now.

Good job retracting the mockery, Mark

still waiting for Duncan to retract “miscreants” and impling the work of Meyers was insubstantial and impious.

and waiting for an apology for woodruff road claiming FVers advocated icons in worship.

and waiting for the SJC to back of from the accusation of negligence.

and wondering how it made sense for an FV critic to claim that he was shocked at the speculation about his motives at the same time he said he knew what motivated his critics.

(for those of you keeping score)
