Do people still play this? Back in 2000 I thought it was the best game ever. And I see that I can get it from Valve for a mere $10. But if no one is playing it, it is not worth it. I don’t want to purchase a program that lets me haunt ghost maps.

A few people still play it, and yes, in 2000 it _was_ the best game ever. Team Fortress 2 was released yesterday and it’s a worthy successor (though a good bit different). For the people who prefer TFC’s gameplay, some folks have done a remake on the HL2 engine: http://fortressforever.com/ (this one’s free if you have HL2).
I wouldn’t bother buying TFC at this point.
Allen, you just moved up my schedule for getting HL2. The cartoonish version of TFC is brilliant, since the strategies that developed were kind of matrix-like in cheating realism. Still, I’m a little bit offended and preferred gritty pseudo-realism.
The other great game from the era was Starsiege Tribes, but I can get the free version to work on Vista. Sad.
Great. The “Orange Box” package Valve is selling has HL2, episodes 1 and 2, TF2, and Portal (which is one of the funniest games I’ve played in years) for $50. You can look me up on the friends network there via my email address, if you like. I’m an avid player of both Fortress games. 🙂
