The Taste column in which this appeared normally features “interesting tidbits” more than “really seriously newsworthy issues.” So it fits with where it appeared.

On the subject itself, I never understood how it made sense to pursue an intimate (to whatever degree) relationship with someone who refused to believe that your perfect, absolutely loving father, your older brother who gave up his life for you, and your unfailingly wise and caring ideal mentor either existed, or were worth paying appropriate respect to for their actual role in your life. For me, even as a very immature teenaged Christian before I was married, it was never about whether it was “okay to do,” but about whether it made any sense whatsoever to involve yourself with someone who either denied the existence of, had little time for, or outright rejected the validity of, the most important relationships in yourself.
