Over here we’ve begun referring to that particular style of facial hair “The Nevin.” Haven’t attempted it myself as the effect would no doubt be ridiculous.
Perhaps if a few of you guys start growing The Nevin, it will not only become fashionable again, but take its rightful place alongside the Vandyke.
I’ve wondered about that chin music in its historical context myself. Was Nevin just a pip with a beard (at a time when most men had facial hair) or was he some really far-out old dude in his day? Sort of like a reformed Timothy Leary.
You can add me to the list of Nevinites (doctrinally, not cosmetically). I *DID* have a Nevin at one time, but my mother and wife said it looked like a “wooly worm crawled onto my face” (their words). I am, though, growing my hair out a bit, and am considering wearing the band collar. I just may go back with the “Nevin” on the chin, but i don’t know how people would receive it. I figure it doesn’t matter what people say anyway, now does it? If my theology is as good as Nevin’s was, anything that makes me look like him is just icing on the cake.
Mark, I just picked up Hart’s book, Deconstructing Evangelicalism, have you read it? If his book on Nevin is any guide it should be fantastic. (I found it at a book store here in Edinburgh for like 3 or 4 pounds.)

Wy,

Mark, y’all should start an alliance.
