The Bridge to Terabithia

Calvin: Stunk!

Nevin: The movie stunk!

Calvin: He never even got to defeat the Dark Master.

Me: Well, he couldn’t Calvin.

Calvin: Why not?

Me: Because the Dark Master was death.

Calvin: So? What about Harry Potter? “The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”

Me: But in Harry Potter they never beat death. The whole point was to admit that they couldn’t yet?

Calvin: But he will be defeated eventually! Why not show that?

Me: Because then the story would have to be about the end of the world.

Calvin: But the story was pointless! It gets an F.

Nevin: Yes! An F-F-F…. (begins singing and dancing as he says the letter grade for the movie over and over.)

Thank God for healthy children

Enfamil_w_Iron_28,5ozSo at some point during World Breastfeeding Week, I went back in the Dooce archives (huge, gartantuan content warning; I AM NOT KIDDING) and read about Leta’s first days in the Armstrong household via Heather’s posts. I knew she would provide me with spiritual nourishment and I was not disappointed:

I decided many years ago that when I eventually had kids I would try my hardest to breastfeed them. I knew it would be something I would have to work at because my sister, whose boobs are far bigger and seemingly more life-giving than mine, had such difficulty trying to breastfeed each of her five kids that the longest she was ever able to feed any of them via the breast was one month. And it wasn’t that she didn’t try very, very hard. It’s just that her milk had the consistency and nourishment of colored water, and her kids were left starving after each feeding. So she switched to formula and now she and all her five healthy children are going straight to hell.

So I want to give public thanks to God for the corporate giants of formula because I prefer what I have to laying flowers by regular appointment on four headstones:

Charis’ friends

So I’m working at the dinner table since the soul of my iMac is somewhere lose in the ether and its body is sitting motionless at my real desk. I’m working on my laptop yesterday morning and the girl pictured left crawls up into the chair beside me in her pajamas and starts playing with the piece of the power cord that plugs into the wall when you don’t want a longer cord and a three-prong and with an ear-mouth piece that plugs into a phone to make it hands free.

Her whispering doesn’t register in my mind. I leave the table to do something and return, realizing I need to make sure she gets dressed. So I tell her it is time to use the potty.

She looks at the hardware in front of her and says to them, “I’ll be right back.”

Outing

Today was Evangeline’s softball party for the end of the season.

Here she is in uniform.

In uniform

Calvin was tired (they are all tired) so most of his pictures are rather down. I did get one action shot when he was charging me as I snapped the picture:

Charge!

After eating in the school gym, we went out and played on the jungle gym–mostly freeze tag. But here’s shot of Nevin helping Charis up.
