God preserve me from ever pulling this trick on anyone. Fewer things make me incoherent with online rage faster than an interlocutor congratulating me for conceding some aspect of orthodoxy that was never at issue, merely because they chose to infer unorthodoxy from something I said and then chose to read my clarification as a course correction. Things like that are one reason I now avoid online controversy.
