In the Gospels we read about people wanting Jesus to lay hands on their children and bless them.
Do we not get that kind of tangible blessing now that Jesus is gone?
This is one reason baptism is so important. Jesus, through another Christian, using water, in the name of the Trinity, has officially imparted blessing to you. It is just as an objective fact in your biography as it was for those children.
Who would dare tell them that the hands laid on them didn’t matter because they weren’t old enough to understand?
Who would dare tell them not to make too much of the ceremony because it was just a ritual?
Many American Evangelicals, that’s who. To their own loss.
