Leaving & cleaving

I had to lead a Bible study that happened to be on Genesis 2 at noon, and then led devotions and picked the call of Abram at random as a text to read.

So for the first time (that I remember) I put these two passages together in my head:

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.”

That has to mean something….  Though I’m not prepared to say what.

Abram and the Land are to be united, but that doesn’t happen right away. So Yahweh puts Abram into deep-sleep, just as He did for Adam, and then Yahweh passes between the parts of the animals, which represent Abram and the Land, so that Yahweh is the one uniting Abram to the Land. When Abram awakes from deep-sleep, he doesn’t get his “bride” right away, but he is told that his descendents will certainly receive the land.

I think the typology fits rather well. Thanks for pointing this out, Mark!

Not to try to force square types into round systems…but Phillipians 2 could be seen as running along the same thread of the tapestry.
