Shaken- Not Stirred

Charis loves the Backyardigans. I really love them, too. The Backyardigans is a show from Nick, Jr., that features different animal friends who obviously live in the suburbs who everyday go to their back yards to play together and find adventure. The show includes lots of singing by the characters and plenty of spoofing of adult movies and book characters to keep the parents interested.

Charis has a few BY books. I was reading them to her this morning, and I found myself laughing as I read Agent Secret. This little story is a spoof of James Bond, and it entertains me as much as it does Charis. For instance, Agent Secret (played by Pablo of the BY gang) likes his juice box . . . shaken. Another place where laughed out loud was when the spy adventure took them to “der Dairy Farm in Switzerland.”

If you like corny jokes and show tunes as I do, you and yours who are 5 and under might appreciate the Backyardigans.

  1. I’ll have to check that out. Andrew likes the BY, too – I love their song “Eureka!” I love, love, LOVE that they use their imaginations to entertain themselves. I’ll have to get a book or two. They’d give us a nice break from “Blue’s Birthday Party” – a cute book that we’re really tired of reading twice a day! Why couldn’t “Very Hungry Caterpillar” be his favorite??? (Don’t get me wrong – he loves all books of all kinds. But when he brings “Blue” out, we all just groan….)

  2. We love them too and ALWAYS check them out at the library! I do get their songs stuck in my head for days, though…specifically, “riding the range.”

  3. I’d never heard of them (so what’s new?), but they sound like lots of fun. Maybe Charis can share a book with me some day.

  4. We’ve never had access to them before b/c we’ve not had cable. But we just signed up about a month ago, and Nicolas is loving it. He adores the Backyardigans. I love the musical aspect to the show too.

  5. Jennifer,
I definitely think BY is way better than Blue!

    Jessie,
Yes. The songs stick in my head too. Right now I can’t get “Into the Thick of It” out of my mind.

    Mom,
I’m sure Charis will be happy to share a book with you.

    Tricia,
We went without satellite for a while, and then, we checked out BY dvds from the library pretty regularly. So if you’re ever cable-less again, the dvds are available. Have you seen any Charlie and Lola from the Disney Channel yet? Some might think Lola is a bit spoiled, but I love the kind way the older brother Charlie treats Lola.

  6. Oh, we’re big fans here. I SO appreciate having that playing in the car instead of the incessantly repetitive (albeit somewhat educational) Dora videos. The one with pie-making ninjas is quite a classic.

Not only is the emphasis on imagination, and not only do kids get exposed to all different kinds of — usually good — music, but did you know that all their dancing is original and done by people in those motion-capture suits like the kind they used for Andy Serkis as Gollum? High-tech, *and* fun!
