Cries in the Night

A few nights ago, I was awakened from a sound sleep around 2:30am by moans. “Mommy, Mommy!” said the monitor under our north facing bedroom windows. That’s Jonathan’s monitor (if you recall from an earlier post, we have three child monitors in our bedroom.)

I made my way upstairs and found Jonathan sitting up in his bed, waiting expectantly for me. When I asked him what was wrong, he replied, “Mommy, sing The Ducks!”

Background: each night, last thing before we say goodnight to him, either Jay or I sing him the song, “Five Little Ducks”.

Given I had already sung, “The Ducks” six hours earlier, while I was still awake, I refused his request, cute though it was and told him it was time to go back to sleep. And back to my bed I went where it took me about 1/2 an hour to get back to sleep myself.

Just shortly after I’d managed to drop back off to dreamland, at approximately 3:30am I heard another cry, again from Jonathan. Not too thrilled with another call so soon, I nevertheless made my way again up to his room. He was again sitting up in bed, this time holding his little sippie cup of water which he promptly handed to me. His comment was, “Mommy, I don’t like this water!”

I had to ask him to repeat himself thinking surely he hadn’t dragged me out of a completely peaceful sleep again just to remark upon the taste of the water we’d given him. But alas, he had. This time I was more curt with Jonathan and I assured him that it would not be wise to call Mommy again in the middle of the night unless something was REALLY wrong!

You may be interested to know that last night as we put Jonathan to bed he again expressed his displeasure with the water we were giving him to keep in his room. Since we obviously weren’t getting it, he directed us specifically to “Go get water from the big sink downstairs.” We have up to this point been lazy I guess, and just put tap water from the upstairs bathroom in the kids’ cups for bed. During the day, we usually all drink water from a Brita filter which is kept in the fridge. Well, it seems little Jonathan has acquired some rather discriminating taste for a 2 1/2 year old b/c he is no longer happy with the sludge from the tap!

At least I am pleased to report that after his two calls for me, he settled down and slept quietly till morning time. And so did I!
