Jesus, Moses, and Elijah

Just a quick question for all of you. Why Moses and Elijah on the mount of transfiguration? Is Jesus’ role as prophet being emphasized? For that matter, here’s another question. It is easy for me to understand king as an enduring office, and priest isn’t too hard either. But what is the role of prophet after the second coming?

  1. What about the fulfilment of the law (Moses) and the prophets (Elijah) in Christ?

As for after the second coming, if the OT prophets were God’s mouthpieces, and Christ is the ultimate Prophet, because He is the Word itself, is there perhaps some way in which He will continue to communicate the wisdom of God to us through eternity? We can’t learn it all at once, methinks.

  2. Check Numbers 11. The universal prophethood of believers (which is inaugurated at Pentecost but only brought to perfection in the final state, when all human speech will be fully revelatory of God and His will) is a fundamental goal of redemptive history.

  3. Tim,

I’m not sure there has to be a contradiction between what I’m saying and what you’re saying. Even if our speech becomes fully revelatory in the sense of everything we say being true, does it follow that we will all immediately know all truth? I’m thinking of the biblical writers–when under the influence of the Spirit, their words were fully God’s Word, but none of them spoke God’s revelation 24/7, and none of them had a complete grasp on the entire infinite Word. Could it be that in eternity, we will have the 24/7 aspect nailed down, but will have all eternity to come to grasp the infinite wisdom of God?

Or if we all are able to instantly and wholly grasp the complete wisdom of the mind of God (the though of it sure blows my mind!), and are able to speak His Word without ceasing, Christ is still the Word–it is His mind in us (1 Cor. 2:16), so in a sense He is still acting in His prophetic role speaking through us.

Cogito Eggo sum (I think, therefore I waffle),

P.S. Disclaimer: I’m definitely in unfamiliar territory on this one, so this, like my previous note, is merely intuitive rambling.
